Gynecomastic - Quick Facts

Anesthesia: Twilight or general anesthesia (asleep) Time: approximately 2 hours

Recovery:   5-14 days Total cost approximately: $3,500 - $4,000

  • Gynecomastia affects 40-60% of the male population.

  • No aspirin products 10 days before surgery.

  • MAO Inhibitors drugs, diet pills and herbal remedies may need to be stopped.

  • Surgery takes approximately two hours under general anesthesia as an outpatient.

  • Incisions range from 1/4 to 3/4 inch in the areola (pink part around nipple) when just liposuction can be used to about 2 inches in the lower chest crease when direct excision is necessary. Scars generally fade quite nicely.

  • Someone must drive you home, stay with you for the next 24 hours and drive you to the office the next day for 24 hour check up.

  • Permanent change in nipple sensation is rare but the operative site will be numb for awhile and the nipple color may change.

  • This is a cosmetic surgery, not covered by insurance, fees are paid in advance.

  • The tissue removed is almost always a combination of fat and actual breast gland.

  • You will wear a compression binder for about three weeks after surgery.

  • Most of the change is apparent in the first few weeks but maximum improvement is not reached until 6-9 months after surgery.

  • Just because this is a want and not a need doesn’t mean it’s any different than any other surgery. It has all the same consequences - including pain.

  • Pain medication and antibiotics scripts are called to your pharmacy in advance.

  • I've not seen any complications in my practice but I have taken a patient back to take out a little more. Being too aggressive can compromise the tissues.

  • It’s rare for anyone to notice a specific change in your chest (unless you tell) They just think you've lost weight, gained weight, been working out, etc.

  • Good posture is very important. For optimal visual effect and the best result, you must break any habits to hunch your shoulders forward. Standing straight with the shoulders square will maximize the contour changes achieved by reducing the fat and breast gland.

  • You must take it easy for 3-4 days. Keep ice on. Return to usual activity, including work, moderate exercise and sex in 4-10 days. Hard physical labor and exercise may take a little longer.

  • Shower within a day or two of surgery.
