Surgery
takes approximately 4 hours, general anesthesia as an
outpatient day surgery

Someone
must drive you home from the hospital or surgery center

Incisions
and resulting scars go around the areola, down the front and
underneath

Like
any other scar, the early scars are red to pink and
typically fade with time

The
nipple may be moved to a higher position on a pedicle or as
a free graft

Nipples moved with a free nipple graft loose
sensation, pedicles usually do not

large, long breast usually need a free nipple graft

Check with your OB/GYN about presurgical mammograms,
particularly if over 40 or have a history of breast disease

You will wake up in a special bra - bleeding and
bruising are usually minimal

The dressing changes aren’t difficult but you may
need help for a few days

Complications are rare and usually not severe- no
different than any other surgery

Pain medication and antibiotics scripts are called to
your pharmacy in advance

Some sutures come out in about a week, the rest in
10-14 days

Soon after surgery patients can tell a difference in
the strain on the shoulders

Internal scarring will cloud mammograms for awhile
-
No breast feeding
